South Korea has enjoyed considerable economic growth since the 1960s. The economy has moved from having the status of a third world nation (LDC) to that of a developed one (HDC) in less than two generations, say about fifty years. With this growth came many lessons in how a nation could follow the same tactics to improve some element of their economy, and thereby, improving the over-all performance of their economy.
Those lessons fall into many categories, but the overall focus is how to improve a national economy of a LDC. Much can be learned from the Korean model of development. But can it all be used? Is the historical situation of the ROK different than that of a LDC, say today, than was their situation in the 1960s and later? What, therefore, can we take from the Korean model to apply to the development of a LDC today?
Product
The audience for this is the leadership of a LDC. Thus, a presentation using Presi or something like it, say Keynote. The information should be easy to understand and appropriate. You MUST explain what can be applied and why. You also MUST explain what cannot be applied and why. (YOU ARE DEMONSTRATING YOUR COLLECTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF KOREA'S ECONOMIC HISTORY AND HOW IT CAN BE APPLIED TO ANOTHER NATION)
In that presentation you will present what lessons to development South Korea can provide for the LDC of your group's choice.
How to do it?
Research what an LDC is. Choose one that you think is most appropriate for the Korean model. The reason for that is important. Why? Think about it. You are a salesman. Make sure the buyer is appropriate. The old saying, "Selling coal in Newcastle" is appropriate here.
Know the history of Korean economic development. See the brief lecture given on 'External factors' in class. What appears below from Dr. Jin Park might also provide some stimulation in terms of present potentialities of South Korea's role in development.
Read pp.286-296. This is the foundation for your report which is ultimately for me. Break up the reading and the work. This is a lengthy read, but you only need to read a few pages as a member and thus share your newly acquired knowledge with your group. Assess it and take from it what you can apply to a LDC.
The video segments on the previous page might also be used.
